Test Swipes


Sample any surface contaminated with radioactivity. These convenient, easy-to-use cloth discs have individual record folders and can be used to perform wipe tests as indicated in NRC and Agreement State Regulations. Each box contains 500 record folders which can be used to identify each sample smear, prevent cross-contamination of smears, transfer smears to the counting facility, or store smears until discarded. Smears have slightly adhesive back for keeping your sample exactly where you need it to be.
Swipes are sold for use with the SEI Wipe Test Plate, which slides easily onto the unit and positioning the depression and wipe directly in front of the GM tube window at a fixed distance of 1 centimeter. The Wipe Test plate is removable for general surveying. Many customers using the SEI Wipe Test Plate also use it as a Beta Shield for the 2-inch GM detector. (patent# 5,936,246)

The Ranger offers maximum performance in a lightweight, rugged solution for surveying at the facility or in the field. The Ranger has been designed for industrial environments, but it still has all of the features youve come to love in the lab. The Ranger is a small, handheld, microprocessor-based instrument which offers excellent sensitivity to low levels of alpha, beta, gamma, and x-rays and has built in efficiencies for common isotopes to calculate activity in Bq and DPM. It has a backlit digital display, a red count light, and a beeper that sounds with each count detected. Other features include selectable alert levels, an adjustable timer, and an optional wipe test plate for swipes. Radiation Alert GammaPAL / What are the different types of swipes available in the GammaPAL?

There are two types of swipes that are for use with the GammaPAL; Air swipes and Wipes for surfaces.

The GammaPAL includes wipes for surface testing and are able to be used with The Ranger and Wipe Test Plate (included with The GammaPAL) for quantification or for use with the GammaPAL sampling matrix for qualification and identification.

Additional Test Swipes Available

Air Swipes are commonly found in an air pump line and are not included in The GammaPAL. They are a typically a small filter that collects the contents of the air passing through it. Most air filters will be able to determine the flow rate. So, for example, you can take a 1 liter sample of air with a fair degree of precision and use the filter to detect potential contaminants in the air via the filter based on a known volume.

Radiation Info / What is the lowest beta energy that SEI's units can detect?

The 10 keV mentioned in some of our specifications is specific to gamma/x rays. For beta particles, it is a bit different. For example, the detector used in The Ranger and Abacus units has an "Areal density" listed as 1.5 to 2.0 mg/cm^2. Looking this up on a beta particle range/energy curve, this thickness will stop all betas up to about 35 keV. Therefore the ABSOLUTE minimum beta energy that can be detected is about 35 keV, not taking into account any other physical factors (distance, self-absorption, the grill over the detector, etc.).

How to Detect Background Radiation

To see what the background radiation is in your area, simply turn the instrument on and, after the 30 second start up beep, the general background radiation will be displayed.

How To Survey a Surface

When surveying a surface, such as a counter top, you will need to hold The Ranger about 1-2 centimeters from the surface while moving the unit horizontally across the survey area at a rate of 2 inches per second.

How to Perform a General Survey

A general survey would be used to find a potential source. For example, if you are looking for a potential source in a pile of scrap, The Ranger will typically detect about 2 feet into a pile. It is easier to find a source when The Ranger is set to Fast Response mode. However, even if The Ranger is in Auto-Averaging mode, the audio clicks that indicate a count should be a sufficient indicator if a potential source is present. To find the source, slowly move The Ranger in the direction of the higher readings or clicks until the potential source is found.

Sensitivity is expressed in cpm per mR/h. Mathematically the cpm units cancel leaving mR/h.

For example, if you have collected 200CPM with the Radiation Alert Ranger, which has a typical gamma sensitivity of 3500 cpm per mR/hr, you would divide the 200 cpm by the 3500cpm per mR/hr sensitivity. The cpm cancels out and you are left with 200/3500 mR/hr = 0.057 mR/hr

Ranger / Can I use a GM Survey Meter to detect radiation in food, water, and soil?

A Geiger counter is a "Yes or no and how much" type of detector. They cannot determine the distribution of the incident radiation energy, so they cannot identify which potential isotopes are present. To identify specific isotopes, a radiation spectrum analyzer with a sensitive enough scintillation detector for the application would be necessary. Geiger counters are ideal for basic screening, especially if you do long timed counts and, in most instances, will give you an indication regarding foods that are significantly contaminated.


When using a Geiger counter to test food, you should take into consideration that the meter is likely missing a bit of the radiation. This is due to the shielding of the radiation by the density of food, and the limitations posed by the detection range of the meter. Alpha radiation can be detected on the food's surface, but can be blocked if there is internal contamination. You can better test food by grinding it into a paste and taking a timed count. This may give an indication that you have contamination in your food, though it will not qualify what type of radiation may be present in the sample.


Water and food can also be a shield for radiation, so unless there is gamma radiation our instruments are not the most ideal without a little processing of the material in question (beta and alpha will not move very far in water and will be shielded by it). You can take a sample of the water and run it through a filter and test the filter or you can evaporate it down and test the swipe on a Ranger Survey Meter with a Wipe Test Plate, however, the URSA-II with the appropriate detector would be much more efficient for this application, but scintillation based instruments are more expensive than the handheld GM based alternatives. Regardless, most of the higher energy betas and gamma radiation that falls within the sensitivity of the detector will be measured.


It is important to remember to establish a background count prior to surveying your samples. To do this, use your Radiation Alert Ranger in the Timed Count mode and take a background count of at least 10 minutes. Then, divide the total counts displayed on the unit by the number of minutes of your count. For instance, if you take a 10 minute timed count, divide the total counts by 10. If you're taking a 24 hour background count, then divide the total by 1440 (the number of minutes in a 24 hour period) to get your Counts Per Minute background level. The longer you take a timed count, the more statistically accurate your reading will be. You will then subtract that amount from the readings of your sample.

Ranger / Are The Radiation Alert Ranger models sensitive to higher elevations and pressure?

Please, take caution when using a unit with a 2 inch mica window at altitudes higher than 8000 feet (2438.4 meters), as tubes can rupture.

The Ranger has 5452 data points. For example, that is 3.79 days at 1 minute intervals.

1 save per minute is 60 save per hour. 60 saves over a 24 hour period is 1440 saves. 5452 divided by 1440 is 3.7 days.

1 save per every 10 minutes is 6 saves per hour. 6*24=144 saves. 5452 divided by 144=37 days.

SEI Inspector / What does The Energy Response Graph mean?

The Energy Response Graph shown in the operation manual gauges how the instrument will respond to various energies. GM detectors cannot distinguish different types of energies, but we can gauge how the detector responds to them.

For example, on the graph shown above, the Sidewall response starts at 50 keV with a relative count rate of 1. This means that an isotope giving off radiation at 50 keV will have a relative response of 1, giving an accurate reading of the radiation present. However, if you notice that at its highest peak, 80 keV, the unit may over respond almost 3 times. This means that if an isotope is emitting radiation at 80 keV, the detector may be reading that there is three times the exposure present than is actually present. The SEI Inspector will again start to have a relative response of 1 at about 230 keV.
