How accurate are radiation detectors?

Most handheld detectors are:

  • ±10% to ±15% accurate (when properly calibrated)

Accuracy depends on:

  • Calibration (usually to Cs‑137)
  • Radiation energy
  • Detector type
  • They are very reliable for trends and safety decisions
  • For regulatory use → NIST calibration is recommended
