Radiation Alert® Ranger EXP

Handheld NORM & Low‑Level Radiation Survey Meter

The Radiation Alert Ranger® EXP is a professional handheld nuclear radiation survey meter engineered for enhanced detection of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) and low‑level radiation. Designed for use in industrial facilities, environmental monitoring, laboratories, and field operations, it delivers laboratory‑grade performance in a compact, portable form.

Advanced Radiation Detection Capabilities

The Radiation Alert Ranger® EXP provides high‑sensitivity detection of alpha, beta, gamma, and X‑ray radiation, with optimized response to low‑energy and naturally occurring radioactive sources. Built‑in efficiencies for common isotopes allow the instrument to calculate radiation activity directly in Becquerels (Bq) and Disintegrations Per Minute (DPM), eliminating the need for manual conversions and supporting accurate contamination and survey assessments.

Portable, User‑Friendly Design

Designed for real‑world use, the Ranger® EXP features a backlit digital LCD display, a red count indicator light, and an audible beeper that signals each detected event. These visual and audible indicators provide immediate feedback and improve situational awareness in both indoor and outdoor environments.

User‑adjustable features include:

  • Selectable alarm thresholds
  • Adjustable counting timer

These controls allow the instrument to be tailored to specific survey protocols, safety requirements, or regulatory workflows.

Data Logging & Connectivity

The Radiation Alert Ranger® EXP includes Free Observer USB Software (Windows compatible), enabling users to download, store, and review radiation measurement data, as well as configure alarms through a computer interface.

For expanded functionality, an optional Bluetooth® module enables wireless connection to the Radiation Alert® Observer BLE Android app. Through the app, users can:

  • View real‑time radiation measurements with descriptions
  • Perform timed counts
  • Add GPS location data to surveys
  • Save, share, and export survey files
  • Mirror instrument alarms on an Android device

Applications & Uses

Surveying for NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) contamination, Gross wipe counting, Contamination surveys of packages, equipment, people, etc., Regulatory inspections, Scrap Metal Screening, Low energy radionuclide detection

Specifications

Detector

Here, are some features of the radiation detector device that is worth mentioning. RAP-RS2 Probe – External Probe Halogen-quenched, uncompensated GM tube with thin mica window, 1.4-2.0 mg/cm2 areal density. Effective diameter of window is 45 mm (1.75 in.).

Operating Range

mR/hr – .001 (1µR) to 100
CPM – 0 to 350,000
µSv/hr – .01 to 1000
CPS – 0 to 5000
Total Counts- 1 to 9,999,000 counts

Energy Sensitivity

Detects Alpha down to 2 MeV. Detects Beta down to .16 MeV; typical detection efficiency at 1 MeV is approx. 25%. Detects Gamma down to 10 KeV through the detector window. 3340 CPM/mR/hr (137Cs). Smallest detectable level for 125I is .02 µCi at contact.

Selectable Alert Settings

mR/hr .001 – 100 and CPM 1 – 350,000. 70db @ 1m. Pulsating beeper sounds the alert. Adjustable alert levels are used for mR/hr / CPM, and µSv/hr / CPS. Alarm will sound when in Timer Mode when set alarm threshold is reached.

Anti-Saturation

Meter will hold at OVER RANGE in fields as high as 100 times the maximum reading.

Averaging Periods

This Radiation detector display updates every 3 seconds. At low background levels, the update is the average for the past 30-second time period. The timed period for the average decreases as the radiation level increases.

What Our Clients Say

Ron Ulbrich, Geiger Counter Pro

“The Radiation Alert Ranger® is a great value for those looking for a modern Geiger counter. I found that is simple to use yet includes many advanced functions if and when you want them without obstructing the simplicity…”

Judson Kenoyer, CHP, CIH

“I have used the Monitor 4 in courses that I teach radiation safety for close to 8 years. The students love it and affectionately call it the “Batman unit” because of its use in the movie The Dark Knight Rises. It is light-weight, sensitive, and quite often out performs some of the more expensive units from other companies that we use in a lab exercise…”

Neil Breslow, NDT Supply

“NDT Supply has been working with SE International since we started business in 2000. We have found them to be easy to work with, and a very reliable and responsive supplier. Questions and issues are always handled promptly and with a smile…”
