Radiation Alert Ranger® – Portable Radiation Detector

Handheld Nuclear Radiation Survey Meter

The Radiation Alert Ranger® is a high‑performance, handheld nuclear radiation detector engineered for professionals who require laboratory‑grade accuracy in a portable field instrument. Designed for industrial facilities, environmental surveys, and field operations, it delivers reliable, real‑time radiation detection in a compact and lightweight form factor.

Comprehensive Radiation Detection

The Radiation Alert Ranger® offers exceptional sensitivity to alpha, beta, gamma, and X‑ray radiation, making it a versatile solution for a wide range of radiation monitoring applications. Built‑in efficiencies for common isotopes allow the device to calculate activity measurements in Becquerels (Bq) and Disintegrations Per Minute (DPM), providing precise and actionable data without external calculations.

Portable, User‑Friendly Design

This handheld digital survey meter features an easy‑to‑read backlit LCD display, a red count indicator light, and an audible beeper that signals each detected count. These visual and audible alerts enhance situational awareness and enable faster response to changing radiation levels.

Key user‑configurable features include:

  • Selectable alarm thresholds
  • Adjustable counting timer
  • Optional wipe test plate for swipe surveys

Together, these options allow the Radiation Alert Ranger® to be tailored to specific operational and compliance requirements.

Advanced Data Logging & Connectivity

The Radiation Alert Ranger® includes Free Observer USB Software (Windows compatible), enabling users to download, view, and manage radiation survey data with ease. The software also supports computer‑based alarm configuration for enhanced monitoring and recordkeeping.

For expanded functionality, an optional Bluetooth® module enables wireless connectivity with the Radiation Alert® Observer BLE app (available on Android via Google Play). Through the app, users can:

  • View real‑time radiation readings with descriptions
  • Perform timed counts
  • Add GPS location data
  • Save and share survey files
  • Mirror instrument alarms directly on an Android device

Applications & Uses

Surveying for NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) contamination, Gross wipe counting, Contamination surveys of packages, equipment, people, etc., Regulatory inspections, Scrap Metal Screening, Low energy radionuclide detection

Specfications

Detector

Internal Halogen-quenched, uncompensated GM tube with thin mica window, 1.4-2.0 mg/cm2 areal density. Effective diameter of window is 45 mm (1.77 in.).

Operating Range
mR/hr – .001 (1µR) to 100
CPM – 0 to 350,000
µSv/hr – .01 to 1000
CPS – 0 to 5000
Total Counts- 1 to 9,999,000 counts

Energy Sensitivity
Detects Alpha down to 2 MeV. Detects Beta down to .16 MeV; typical detection efficiency at 1 MeV is approx. 25%. Detects Gamma and X-rays down to 10 KeV through the detector window. 3340 CPM/mR/hr (137Cs). Smallest detectable level for 125I is .02 µCi at contact.

Built-in Efficiencies
Sulfur (35S), Strontium (90Sr/y), Cesium (137Cs), Phosphorus (32P), Carbon (14C), Iodine (131I), Cobalt (60Co), and Alpha

Display
Graphic LCD with Backlight

Anti Saturation
Meter will hold at OVER RANGE in fields as high as 100 times the maximum reading.

Averaging Periods
This radiation detector display updates every 3 seconds. At low background levels, the update is the average for the past 30-second time period. The timed period for the average decreases as the radiation level increases.

Outputs

USB for use with Free Observer USB Software for PCs Bluetooth Option additional: Wirelessly connects the instrument with an Android mobile device for use with Free Observer BLE App

Count Light
Red LED flashes with each radiation event.

Power Indicator
Internally mounted beeper (can be switched off for silent operation)

Power Requirements
USB Power or Two (2) AA alkaline batteries (included). Approx. 800 hrs @ background.

Accuracy
Reference to Cs137
Typically ±15% from factory, ±10% with NIST Source Calibration NIST Calibration Additional

Selectable Alert Settings
mR/hr .001 – 100 and CPM 1 – 350,000. Pulsating beeper sounds the alert. Adjustable alert levels are used for mR/hr / CPM, and µSv/hr / CPS. 70db @ 1m. Alarm will sound when in Timer Mode when set alarm threshold is reached.

What Our Clients Say

Ron Ulbrich, Geiger Counter Pro

“The Radiation Alert Ranger® is a great value for those looking for a modern Geiger counter. I found that is simple to use yet includes many advanced functions if and when you want them without obstructing the simplicity…”

Judson Kenoyer, CHP, CIH

“I have used the Monitor 4 in courses that I teach radiation safety for close to 8 years. The students love it and affectionately call it the “Batman unit” because of its use in the movie The Dark Knight Rises. It is light-weight, sensitive, and quite often out performs some of the more expensive units from other companies that we use in a lab exercise…”

Neil Breslow, NDT Supply

“NDT Supply has been working with SE International since we started business in 2000. We have found them to be easy to work with, and a very reliable and responsive supplier. Questions and issues are always handled promptly and with a smile…”
